Building for the Future PCH Foundation Breaking Ground on Learning and Innovation Project

A plan to support the future of healthcare in our region is officially under construction. The PCH Foundation’s Learning and Innovation Centre project has received the official “green light” from our Board of Directors to move forward with a transformative $38.5 million vision. We have secured federal and provincial funding, purchased strategically located property and are collaborating with community leaders and stakeholders to see this vision implemented. This community-owned asset reinforces our commitment to ensuring PCH remains a leader in medical excellence for decades to come.

The first phase of this ambitious plan focuses on the construction of a Learning and Innovation Centre to be connected to PCH via pedway. With completion planned for May 2028, this facility is designed to be a game-changer for the region, directly addressing one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare today: the recruitment and retention of professionals.

Key features of the new multi-use facility include:

  • Medical Training Hub: Dedicated space for simulation learning and on-site training to provide the UPEI Faculty of Medicine with a footprint in Prince County and help to train new and existing staff, and community emergency service users.
  • Essential Infrastructure: Integrated childcare and temporary housing to support the daily lives of healthcare workers.
  • Expanded Services: Potential for a Patient Medical Home and complementary health services to improve overall system capacity.

Leadership for a New Era

To spearhead this massive undertaking, the Foundation welcomed Chad Mann, shown in the photo above on the left, as Project Manager last fall. With a background in strategic development, Mann will oversee the new facility’s development. “The Foundation is demonstrating true leadership and elevating its support of PCH with this endeavour,” says Mann. “When looking at the future needs of the UPEI Medical School, healthcare staff training, and accommodations, this project checks all the boxes.”

Foundation President Derek Bondt (above photo, right) and the Board see this project as more than just a building; it is a “bold step” toward securing the hospital’s future. By creating a campus that combines education, professional support, and clinical services, the Foundation’s project ensures that Prince County remains a destination of choice for the next generation of healers.
