Vital Signs 2018

The PCH Foundation is launching its Vital Signs Appeal for 2018 which serves the greatest needs of patients at the hospital. This year, new and replacement medical equipment will cost over $1.5 million. There are important pieces needed in nearly every unit at the hospital, including the replacement of digital radiography equipment in the main X-Ray room at PCH. In the event of an emergency, digital radiography (X-Ray) might be considered the gateway to further care in any hospital. It can help to determine next steps when time matters most and it is certainly among the most valuable assets at the PCH. An estimated 60 to 80 patients are imaged daily using digital radiography at PCH and during busy times as high as 100 patients come through the department. The room was the first of its kind when PCH opened in 2004 and it has been a vital function of the hospital ever since. Fourteen years later, the X-Ray machine and the additional equipment in the room have reached the end of their lifecycle. The cost to replace the equipment will be $550,000, a considerable portion of the overall campaign to keep PCH vibrant and viable in 2018. Sharon and … Continued

Meet the Handrahans – Grateful for Care

There are no planned accidents. You never know when an accident will happen. But, when Bernard and Sharon Handrahan were in a car accident this February, the team at Prince County Hospital was ready and fully equipped to help them. Though it was a “write off,” their van and its air bags kept them alive despite hitting a tree so hard that their headlights were now facing each other. “We hit it right in the middle,” said Bernard in a recent PCH Foundation interview. “If it had been more right or left, there’d only be one of us here. I was stunned. I knew Sharon was hurt, but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even check if she was okay.” Sharon was not, in fact, okay. The couple from Christopher’s Cross (just outside of Tignish) was rushed to the PCH Emergency Department. Through Digital Radiography (x-rays) and numerous other tests, it was a determined Sharon had several fractured ribs, as well as a collapsed lung and would need emergency surgery. “It was amazing,” she said. “Before I knew it, they had diagnosed me. You get to see them all work and it’s a well-oiled machine. They all have their jobs … Continued

Harry T Holman Award Nominations

A CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The PCH Foundation presents the annual Harry T. Holman award to a volunteer or volunteer group who has made a significant contribution to Prince County Hospital and the people it serves.  In 2017, we were pleased to recognize the efforts of both a volunteer and a volunteer group for this award – the Summerside Lions Club and their member Andrew Gallant. The Summerside Lions Club has been a friend to the Prince County Hospital now for many years. Not only do they give financially each year to support the purchase of medical equipment, their members have come forward many times to help out with ongoing fundraising efforts and special events of the Foundation. Through the organization of Andrew Gallant, there has been a team of Summerside Lions Club members and spouses each year for the past 9 years on hand to help set up and to serve over 1,300 people.  No job is ever too much and they are there from the beginning to the end, with a helping hand and a Happy to Help attitude. The PCH Foundation has awarded the Harry T. Holman award now for 33 years to some wonderful people and dedicated … Continued

Callbecks Furnishing PCH

Over the past few years the staff at Callbecks Home Hardware and Callbecks Home Furniture & Appliances has been working tirelessly to raise funds for their hospital. Over the course of that time the staff members had many fundraising projects including dress down Fridays and new candy machines in the stores with 100% of profits going to the PCH Foundation. They even created their own 50/50 draw all in hopes of making a substantial gift. Recently this culminated in a donation of $11,300.00 that was presented to Prince County Hospital Foundation Board member Paul Power, second from left. Presenting on behalf of the staff (from front left) are Duane MacDonald (Callbecks owner), Monica Poirier, Ruth MaCarville, Cathy Clow, Linda McCardle, Bonnie Farrell, Heather Allan, Kaitlyn MacNevin. Back (L-R) Joanne Bridges, Scott Perry, Hilton Plats, Paul Arsenault, Greg Roach, Alex Brown, Blair Gallant “We are extremely happy to be able to make this donation on behalf of our staff,” says Duane MacDonald.  “They have worked very hard and came up with a lot of creative fundraising ideas which helped make the process fun and it is rewarding to know this is going to help so many people at our local hospital. … Continued

2017 Vital Signs Greatest Needs Appeal Results

Thanks to the generosity of thousands of people, the Prince County Hospital Foundation will be able to purchase every item needed from the 2017 Vital Signs annual appeal for the hospital’s greatest needs.  We began 2017 with a very ambitious goal – the largest single year campaign in our history. Through a combination of mail appeals, special events, memorial donations, stock donations, and corporate gifts, $2,366,868 was raised, meaning each vital piece of medical equipment will be purchased to benefit the thousands of patients who use Prince County Hospital each year. The majority of the donations from 2017 will support the much needed upgrading of the three operating rooms at PCH. “We spoke a great deal about the needs in Surgical Services’ Operating Rooms (OR) last year and for good reason, remarked PCH Foundation’s volunteer board president Patrick McSweeney. “An average of 2200 surgeries are performed at PCH annually on patients from all over PEI and the upgrades needed in the OR made up a considerable amount of the 2017 goal. At $1.4 million, it was a very big ticket item.” Though the project, expected to be completed in the summer of 2018, was the centrepiece of the 2017 Vital … Continued

Refitting the ORs

“It is unimaginable to think what our story would be if these services were not available at the PCH.” That is the sentiment Lori Pomeroy expressed when she discussed the life saving surgery her son Campbell received at the Prince County Hospital two years ago. He was rushed to the Emergency Department at the PCH with what the family thought were flu-like symptoms that were persisting for days. However, Campbell’s body was quickly “shutting down” and he required emergency surgery.  While in surgery, it was discovered that his bowel had twisted and ruptured and he was septic. It was determined he had Meckel’s Diverticulum and consequently he had 60cm of his small intestine removed that day.  “It was a very intense situation and doctors told us ideally he would be airlifted to IWK,” says Lori. “However, he was not stable enough to be transported.  He did not have time.  So, without the teams in Emergency services, the Operating Room, and the equipment used that day at the PCH, our son would not have made it. We are forever grateful that we can share this miraculous story.” This surgery and many others have been possible because of the team in Surgical … Continued
