Prince County Hospital Foundation Announces $7 Million in Federal Funding to Support New Multi-Use Facility in Summerside
Summerside, Prince Edward Island – March 22, 2025 – The Prince County Hospital Foundation is thrilled to announce a $7 Million investment from the Federal Government to support the development of a new multi-use facility to be constructed on a parcel of land recently acquired by the Foundation adjacent to Prince County Hospital (PCH).
MP for Egmont, Bobby Morrissey, was on hand at PCH to make the announcement on behalf of the Liberal Government contributing $7 Million, “This announcement supports what will be one of the most transformational community-led initiatives in the country to help improve system challenges. Our government is pleased to help bring this project to fruition for the benefit of so many Islanders.”
The new facility will address a range of healthcare and community needs with long-term benefits to help stabilize care in the region. It will support the PEI Family Medical Residency Program, offering both teaching and housing spaces for residents and medical learners as well as other healthcare workers. A key feature of the facility will be its simulation space, which will be available for use by the University of Prince Edward Island’s Faculty of Medicine, PCH staff, as well as a variety of external groups who require specialized training facilities. Additionally, the facility will feature an early years child care centre, addressing the pressing childcare needs of healthcare workers.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be $25 million, with the PCH Foundation actively exploring additional funding opportunities to meet this goal. Today’s announcement further solidifies the planning and construction of the facility after the Foundation received a $10 million commitment from the Provincial Government of PEI at the Grass Roots and Cowboy Boots hospital fundraiser this past fall.
“This is an exciting moment for the future of healthcare in our community,” said Derek Bondt, President of the PCH Foundation and Co-chair of the PCH Foundation’s Horizons Committee. “This special project offers so much opportunity to support the wonderful people who work at PCH. Longterm, it will make a material difference in stabilizing and strengthening the incredible care provided at the hospital. The support from both the federal and provincial governments brings us one step closer to realizing our vision for a facility that will have a lasting positive impact on healthcare in Prince County and across PEI. This project will not only help address critical staffing and training needs but also improve the quality of life for healthcare workers and their families. We are deeply grateful for the support we have received from both the federal and provincial governments and look forward to the positive impact this facility will have for years to come.”
The Prince County Hospital Foundation is committed to working with its partners and the community to complete this important project. Further announcements regarding additional funding and project milestones will be shared as the plans progress.
