Vital Signs Equipment Campaign Launch 2011

Each year for the Vital Signs Annual Equipment Campaign, a list of priority medical equipment is identified and approved by the Medical Advisory Board.  This year the list of needed medical equipment totals $1,118,512. Because the Prince County Hospital requires this new equipment to continue providing quality care to Islanders, the hospital foundation will need the help of the communities PCH serves.   PCH has been supporting Islanders for nearly a century. For many years now, raising funds for new medical equipment has been and continues to be, the exclusive responsibility of our communities.  There is no other source of funding for priority medical equipment on PEI.   Last year alone many supporters helped raise funds for another large campaign goal; a goal that included items such as a portable ultrasound unit for the ER and an echocardiogram unit for Diagnostic Imaging. All of the items from the 2010 campaign have been purchased and are in use helping people from all over PEI.   This year in the Vital Signs Annual Equipment Campaign the PCH Foundation is raising funds for many integral pieces of medical equipment.  And in addition to raising funds to provide new and replacement items for … View full news story.

Building for a Healthy Future: Hemodialysis at PCH

In November 2008, the Provincial Government announced capital funding to move the Summerside dialysis unit from its current location at the Summerset Manor to the Prince County Hospital.  The current location is no longer suitable for patients or staff due to limited space.   According to information on PEI government website www.buildpei.ca, “the unit will contain 7 individual treatment areas and two isolation rooms as well as other space to support service delivery. (i.e training room and bio-medical room). Treatment capacity will be more than doubled as individual treatment areas increase from the current four to nine spaces. The addition of two isolation rooms means improved infrastructure for infection control purposes. A new Reverse Osmosis water treatment system will be introduced, improving the quality of the water used for hemodialysis treatments. Improved water quality means improved patient outcomes.”   Those plans have come to fruition as shovels have hit dirt for the first time in the year long project.  The new unit is slated to open in 2012 and its 9 chairs will give a maximum capacity of 54 patients per week according to Dr. Bruce Jones, Nephrologist and advocate for dialysis in Prince County.  In a recent interview … View full news story.

PCHF Holds Annual Meeting

Donors, board members, staff and interested parties gathered in the PCH cafeteria recently for PCH Foundation’s Annual Meeting.  The purpose of this event is to recap the year that was 2010 and to thank those that made it such a successful year for the Prince County Hospital Foundation.  The evening’s program was presided over by Foundation Secretary Wayne Carew and it began with Hailey Arsenault, President of Youth Who Care, who recapped a very successful year for their board.  Also, Arlene Gallant-Bernard, PCH Executive Director, brought remarks on behalf of PCH and its administration.  PCH Auxiliary president Debbie MacLellan brought greetings on behalf of her organization and reminisced on what a great fundraising year they’d had in 2010, donating over $50,000 to the PCH Foundation.  The PCH auxiliary reached a new milestone in 2010, a cumulative giving total of between $500,000 and $999,999 since 2000.  To commemorate the occasion, a new category was added to the Foundation’s ‘Donor Wall of Honour’ called ‘Humanitarian’ in which they are the first entry.   Prince County Hospital ER Physician Dr. Steven MacNeill was the keynote speaker for the evening, with a theme of ‘thanks.’  He talked about his appreciation for how the … View full news story.

PCH Auxiliary Gives Islanders a Lift!

The Prince County Hospital Auxiliary has helped to kick off the 2011 annual equipment campaign for the Prince County Hospital Foundation with a bang.  They have made a gift of $20,000 to provide patient ceiling lifts for various departments at PCH.  PCHA members Debbie MacLellan, president, second from right, Jan Lockhart, treasurer, right, and Darlene Arsenault, second from left, present PCH Foundation managing director Heather Matheson with the donation. These lifts are vital to patient and staff safety as they assist in the transportation of patients to and from hospital beds.  At a recent Foundation event, president MacLellan said, “These 8 ceiling lifts are to be placed (in various departments) throughout the hospital.  It is definitely an item that will be of benefit to both the patient and the staff in that there should be less risk of injury to staff and more comfort to patients who are to be relocated.  In the end that’s really what it’s all about.” These ceiling lifts are part of the PCH Foundation’s Vital Signs annual equipment campaign, in which they hope to raise $1.1 Million in 2011. The Prince County Hospital Foundation raised $936,025 during its 2010 “Vital Signs” annual equipment campaign.  “We’ve reached 96% of our 2010 goal.  This is a great success for our Foundation”, says Managing Director Heather Matheson.   “It is the largest amount ever garnered from strictly community donations at the Foundation.  Every pledged donation, memorial gift, or planned legacy gift means a great deal to our campaign, our hospital, and the communities it serves.  We are truly grateful for the interest our communities take in ensuring this hospital is well equipped.”

“Much like our 2010 slogan said, It Takes a Community to Build a Healthy Tomorrow, and our communities have much to be proud of.  There was a very diverse list of equipment needed in 2010, with items required in nearly every department,” says Bill Thompson, president of the PCH Foundation Board of Directors.   Thompson continues, “While most items replaced equipment that had reached the end of its lifecycle, there were several items on the 2010 list that bring new services to PCH.  Thanks to generous donations, there will be great improvements at PCH including new equipment like the Electromagnetic Navigation System used by ENT specialists in sinus procedures and upgrades to equipment in Emergency and the Maternal Child Care Unit.  The ENT equipment alone has been used several times already and is much appreciated by Ear-Nose-and Throat specialists at PCH.”

In the ER, the addition of a new portable Ultrasound unit will help to ensure the vital and quick diagnosis to many trauma cases in the Emergency unit.  The ER sees an average of 30,000 patients annually.  According to ER physician Dr. Steven MacNeill, “The portable ultrasound is the stethoscope of the 21st century.”  He elaborates that “… with it ER physicians are able to extend their physical exam and investigative skills into the body visually.  At PCH this technology is being used on a daily basis to help assess for potentially life threatening conditions immediately at the bedside, allowing faster diagnosis and safer discharge of patients.” As former patient Gary Naylor of Victoria West will attest, it is a vital piece of equipment that helped to save his life on not one, but two occasions.

Looking forward to 2011 …

The Foundation will announce the 2011 goal and equipment highlights in the near future.  Equipment requirements continue as some items reach the end of their life cycle, new technologies are created, and departments continue to see growing patient numbers.  One category of interest on the 2011 list will be the addition of a Hemo-Dialysis Unit to the Prince County Hospital.  The construction of the unit is set to begin this spring according to the PEI government, and equipment needs for this unit alone will make up a large part of the PCH Foundation’s 2011 Vital Signs Annual Equipment Campaign.

“Medical needs are continual.  Without the support of the generous people throughout our communities, we would not be able to provide PCH with the priority medical equipment its patients need,” said Matheson.

Yolande Richard, representing the Prince County Hospital Foundation’s board of directors, left, accepts a gift of $750.00 from Sheila Compton, event chairperson for the Mardi Gras Funspiel.  The funds were raised during the annual event held at the Silver Fox in February.  Held for over 30 years, the Funspiel is a fixture on the local curling scene and dedicates a portion of entry fees each year to help fund equipment at the Prince County Hospital.  According to Compton, “This event would not be possible without the support of sponsors Pepsi and the Summerside Butcher Shop.”

A Special Delivery for Lights for Life

Five years ago the staff at ADL Foods in Summerside lost a special friend and co-worker in Jackie Praught.  And over the past five years, the staff group has made a special gift to Lights for Life in memory of their friend in a way they thought was fitting and would have pleased him.  In an interview with the Prince County Hospital Foundation, Gwen Murray, Purchasing Manager of ADL Foods said, “Jackie was a man who helped everyone he met.  And he would have liked to know that even in death; he was still helping all of those who visit the Prince County Hospital.”   The staff of ADL Foods runs various fundraisers throughout the year to gather $2000 and dedicate the display “A Special Delivery” in memory of Jackie Praught.  Their gift in memory of a friend and co-worker supports the needs of their whole community, as all of the funds raised through Lights for Life are used to purchase much needed medical equipment for the Prince County Hospital.  Not only are they able to make this gift, but on December 1st, they will gather as a group to attend the Lights for Life ceremony and watch Jackie’s display … View full news story.
