Prince County Hospital Foundation Launches 2024 Vital Signs Appeal

Summerside, Prince Edward Island, May 17th, 2024 – The Prince County Hospital Foundation is launching its 2024 Vital Signs Appeal with the ambitious goal of raising $2,023,700 to supply new and replacement medical equipment for Prince County Hospital.

As a primary acute healthcare facility in Prince Edward Island, Prince County Hospital plays a pivotal role by offering care to patients from across the island. The hospital’s medical equipment is key for delivering that critical care. With technological advancements constantly emerging, it’s important to keep pace with the latest innovations so healthcare professionals can provide safe and efficient treatment. This year’s roster of greatest needs includes essential items such as a Chemistry Analyzer for the Laboratory, Cardiac Ultrasound for Diagnostic Imaging, and Pulmonary Function Testing equipment for Ambulatory Care.

A Chemistry Analyzer is a crucial instrument for the hospital used by Laboratory Services for rapid diagnostics. Technologists like Simon Berger (pictured) use it to test blood and plasma for various electrolytes, enzymes, and proteins such as troponin, used to diagnose patients experiencing chest pain. Because of the nature of these tests, they must be done accurately and promptly.  Using this instrument, most patient results can be acquired within 60 minutes. Central to the day-to-day function of the Lab, the analyzer needed in 2024 costs $245,000 and will replace the current backup unit. Having a backup ensures that PCH Lab staff can provide testing when the main unit is down for daily maintenance or repairs, thereby continuing to offer the highest quality of care to patients.

“Islanders rely on Prince County Hospital every single day for their acute care needs. From planned procedures in Ambulatory Care to emergencies, PCH is at the forefront of ensuring Islanders receive the best possible treatment,” remarks PCH Foundation’s president Gordon MacFarlane. “The 2024 Vital Signs Appeal represents an opportunity for us to unite and ensure your hospital remains equipped with cutting-edge technology so that the physicians, nurses and staff at PCH have everything they need when time matters most.”

The Prince County Hospital Foundation invites the community to join the 2024 Vital Signs Appeal by generously contributing today. Every dollar raised will directly contribute to the acquisition of state-of-the-art medical equipment.

PFT is a non-invasive test used to diagnose and guide the treatment of various lung diseases such as COPD, asthma, and restrictive lung diseases. The PFT System performs tests to examine a patient’s lung volume and efficiency within a “body box” chamber. The hospital requires a new unit in 2024 valued at $70,000.
