  Heather Millar has close connection to the Prince County Hospital. Her father, Edgar Millar, who passed away nearly 5 years ago, had spent time in the Palliative Care unit and her mother, Betty, volunteers at the Wishing Well Gift Shop in the PCH.  This year for the Lights for Life campaign, Heather, a Sun Life Financial Advisor, decided to make a gift in memory of her father and a gift to honour her mother.  “I truly believe in the Lights for Life campaign,” says Millar.  When asked why she chose the PCH Foundation for her charitable giving this year, she replied,” I know the money is being used for important equipment at the PCH.  I know about the great care at our hospital.”   Recently Heather Millar, left, presented a gift of $1000 for “Lights for Life” to Heather Matheson, Managing Director at the PCH Foundation.  With her gift she dedicated a tree of blue lights in memory of her father and a gold light in honour of her mother.   This year, Lights for Life takes place December 7th at 6:30PM at the Prince County Hospital.  If you or someone you know would like to dedicate a light … Continued

On Wednesday evening December 7th at 6:30PM, all are invited to attend the 17th Annual “Lights for Life” event at Prince County Hospital. As always, the community will come together to remember special loved ones and celebrate the coming holiday season. When donors dedicate a light or display, in honour or in memory of someone special, they help purchase the medical equipment needed at the PCH this year.   “This year’s ‘Lights for Life’ campaign is underway and donor packages have been mailed for 2011,” says PCH Foundation managing director Heather Matheson.  “This is a fundraiser in which everyone can participate, as there are dedication lights starting at $10.  White, red, blue, green, and gold lights are available for dedication, as are various larger displays.” Returning to the lighting display this year are the Grand Arch, the Snowflakes, the Toy Train, and the Nutcrackers, among others.  As always, the centerpiece of the display will be the Celebration Tree.  The Credit Unions of Prince County are joining Lights for Life for year 4 of their 5 year partnership.  Without the support of the Credit Unions, and other sponsors, this event would not be possible.  Their help ensures all proceeds go toward … Continued

  Each year for the Vital Signs Annual Equipment Campaign, a list of priority medical equipment is identified and approved by the Medical Advisory Board.  This year the list of needed medical equipment totals $1,118,512. Because the Prince County Hospital requires this new equipment to continue providing quality care to Islanders, the hospital foundation will need the help of the communities PCH serves.   PCH has been supporting Islanders for nearly a century. For many years now, raising funds for new medical equipment has been and continues to be, the exclusive responsibility of our communities.  There is no other source of funding for priority medical equipment on PEI.   Last year alone many supporters helped raise funds for another large campaign goal; a goal that included items such as a portable ultrasound unit for the ER and an echocardiogram unit for Diagnostic Imaging. McInnes Cooper Presents the Fourth Annual Women’s Golf Classic McInnes Cooper’s Nancy Key, right, presents Angela Carragher, member of PCH Foundation’s Friend–Raising Committee and Physiotherapy Supervisor at PCH, with a cheque for $5000.  McInnes Cooper is returning as the presenting sponsor for the PCH Foundation’s Fourth Annual Women’s Golf Classic. The Women’s Golf Classic will take place on September 23rd at Red Sands Golf Club in Clinton.  72 women are taking part in this event in hopes of raising much needed funds for PCH’s Secondary Stroke Prevention Clinic.  For more information about this event please contact the PCH Foundation office at info@pchcare.com or 432-2547.

  In November 2008, the Provincial Government announced capital funding to move the Summerside dialysis unit from its current location at the Summerset Manor to the Prince County Hospital.  The current location is no longer suitable for patients or staff due to limited space.   According to information on PEI government website www.buildpei.ca, “the unit will contain 7 individual treatment areas and two isolation rooms as well as other space to support service delivery. (i.e training room and bio-medical room). Treatment capacity will be more than doubled as individual treatment areas increase from the current four to nine spaces. The addition of two isolation rooms means improved infrastructure for infection control purposes. A new Reverse Osmosis water treatment system will be introduced, improving the quality of the water used for hemodialysis treatments. Improved water quality means improved patient outcomes.”   Those plans have come to fruition as shovels have hit dirt for the first time in the year long project.  The new unit is slated to open in 2012 and its 9 chairs will give a maximum capacity of 54 patients per week according to Dr. Bruce Jones, Nephrologist and advocate for dialysis in Prince County.  In a recent interview … Continued

  Donors, board members, staff and interested parties gathered in the PCH cafeteria recently for PCH Foundation’s Annual Meeting.  The purpose of this event is to recap the year that was 2010 and to thank those that made it such a successful year for the Prince County Hospital Foundation.  The evening’s program was presided over by Foundation Secretary Wayne Carew and it began with Hailey Arsenault, President of Youth Who Care, who recapped a very successful year for their board.  Also, Arlene Gallant-Bernard, PCH Executive Director, brought remarks on behalf of PCH and its administration.  PCH Auxiliary president Debbie MacLellan brought greetings on behalf of her organization and reminisced on what a great fundraising year they’d had in 2010, donating over $50,000 to the PCH Foundation.  The PCH auxiliary reached a new milestone in 2010, a cumulative giving total of between $500,000 and $999,999 since 2000.  To commemorate the occasion, a new category was added to the Foundation’s ‘Donor Wall of Honour’ called ‘Humanitarian’ in which they are the first entry.   Prince County Hospital ER Physician Dr. Steven MacNeill was the keynote speaker for the evening, with a theme of ‘thanks.’  He talked about his appreciation for how the … Continued

The Prince County Hospital Auxiliary has helped to kick off the 2011 annual equipment campaign for the Prince County Hospital Foundation with a bang.  They have made a gift of $20,000 to provide patient ceiling lifts for various departments at PCH.  PCHA members Debbie MacLellan, president, second from right, Jan Lockhart, treasurer, right, and Darlene Arsenault, second from left, present PCH Foundation managing director Heather Matheson with the donation. These lifts are vital to patient and staff safety as they assist in the transportation of patients to and from hospital beds.  At a recent Foundation event, president MacLellan said, “These 8 ceiling lifts are to be placed (in various departments) throughout the hospital.  It is definitely an item that will be of benefit to both the patient and the staff in that there should be less risk of injury to staff and more comfort to patients who are to be relocated.  In the end that’s really what it’s all about.” These ceiling lifts are part of the PCH Foundation’s Vital Signs annual equipment campaign, in which they hope to raise $1.1 Million in 2011.
